TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Clemson freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds ended Florida State hopes of a comeback on Saturday night, Oct. 31, racing 79 yards to the end zone on a third-and-12 play with 3:17 left to finish off a 36-24 Tigers victory at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles had climbed back from a 29-10 hole to get within five points with about five and a half minutes to go. After a holding penalty pushed Clemson back, Reynolds slipped a tackle and ran down the Clemson sideline. No Clemson quarterback had ever covered more ground on one carry, according to the school.
Reynolds threw for 189 yards on 18-of-32 passing, hit Christian Bentancur and Olsen Patt-Henry, both tight ends, for first-half scores, and ran for 85 yards. Kicker Nolan Hauser went 5-for-5 on field goals, including a 50-yarder as the first half expired that sent Clemson to the locker room up 23-10.
The Clemson defense took the ball away four times, a season high, with two interceptions by Elliot Washington II. Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels still threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Micahi Danzy caught four passes for 108 yards, including a 46-yard scoring play in the first quarter.
The win lifted Clemson to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC and gave Dabo Swinney 117 regular-season conference wins, tying the league mark held by former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. Florida State fell to 3-5 and 1-4.
