TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Clemson starting left guard Elyjah Thurmon was kept overnight at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital after a blow to the head during the second quarter of a Clemson win over Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 31.
The play came on a first-and-20 run. Thurmon joined a pile of players pushing running back Jarvis Green forward and collided head-to-head with a Florida State player. He lay on the turf at Doak Campbell Stadium for several minutes while medical staff worked on him before he was loaded onto a cart, and he raised a fist as he left.
Players from both teams stayed on the field during the stop, some kneeling and some praying, and the full Clemson roster and staff gathered around him before he was driven off. An ambulance then took him to the hospital, where his mother joined him.
Head coach Dabo Swinney said after the game that the early signs were encouraging. He said Thurmon was moving and had good strength, that the problem looked like a concussion or something in the neck area, and that the team hoped he would be released on Sunday.
Clemson went on to beat the Seminoles 36-24 and moved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Gavin Blanchard, a sophomore, filled the left guard spot for the rest of the night. Thurmon, a junior in his first season as a starter, also left the Sept. 25 game against California with an injury and missed the Oct. 3 game at Miami before coming back Oct. 17 against Charleston Southern.
