CLEMSON, S.C. — The third-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team closed its regular season with a 2-1 win over No. 16 Wake Forest on Friday night at Historic Riggs Field, sending its seniors off in front of a crowd of 4,389.
After a scoreless first half in which Clemson put 10 shots on frame, senior Mason Jimenez converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute after Ransford Gyan was fouled inside the box. Gyan made it 2-0 in the 65th minute, running onto a long through ball from freshman Mateo Tsakiris.
Wake Forest got one back in the 69th minute on a penalty awarded after a video review, scoring on the rebound after goalkeeper Gaizka Garcia made the first save. Clemson held on from there, finishing with a 20-10 edge in shots while Garcia stopped five.
The Tigers are now 12-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in ACC play. Wake Forest dropped to 11-4-2.
Clemson honored seven seniors before the match. The Tigers will host a first-round ACC Tournament match at Riggs Field on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with the opponent and start time to be set once the regular season wraps up.
