CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Clemson women’s soccer was less than a minute from knocking off No. 21 Virginia on Thursday night in Charlottesville, but a late Cavaliers goal left the teams level at 1-1 at Klöckner Stadium.
Freshman Reagan Thompson put the Tigers ahead in the 44th minute. Dani Davis lofted a ball over the Virginia back line, and Thompson ran onto it, settled it and finished for her third goal of the year to send Clemson to halftime up 1-0.
Virginia pushed in the second half, and goalkeeper Nona Reason kept the lead alive with five saves, including two stops on back-to-back shots in the 74th minute. The Cavaliers broke through in the 90th, when Carrie Helfrich found Addison Halpern near the penalty mark for her ninth goal of the season.
The result moves Clemson to 6-4-5 overall and 2-3-3 in the ACC, while Virginia sits at 8-3-3 and 4-3-1. The Tigers stay on the road and face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg at 5 p.m. Sunday.
