GREENVILLE, S.C. — Clemson defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler reached the end of his fight with Hodgkin lymphoma on Thursday, ringing the bell at the Prisma Health Cancer Institute to mark his last round of treatment.
The Tigers lineman learned of the diagnosis in May and spent roughly seven months in treatment. He turned 21 last week.
He was not alone for the moment. Family members, friends, Clemson coaches and teammates came out to the Greenville center, and a group of players waited outside the doors to greet him once the bell had rung. Head coach Dabo Swinney was among those on hand.
Swinney has described the young defender as a daily lesson in perspective for the rest of the roster during the months of treatment. Brown-Shuler said finishing lifted a heavy weight after a frustrating stretch, and he made clear that his next goal is getting back to football.
The milestone comes as Clemson prepares to host Virginia Tech at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
