Clemson, S.C. — William Moreland was sworn in as Clemson University fire chief, capping his first full week on the job after 30 years with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Clemson University Vice President and Chief of Staff Alton Standifer and Associate Vice President for Public Safety Kimberly Spears-McNatt opened the ceremony. Lindsey Simmons, chief judge of Clemson University Municipal Court, administered the oath of office.
Moreland said he was honored to serve as fire chief for Clemson University and the city of Clemson and to work alongside Clemson University Fire and EMS. His children and parents pinned him during the ceremony before he received his helmet.
He formally assumed command from Fire Marshal Kevin Christenbury, who served as interim chief during the transition. Clemson News reported the swearing-in on Friday, Oct. 9, with campus coverage published as the university introduced its new chief.
University public safety leaders framed the ceremony as the official start of Moreland leadership of Clemson Fire and EMS for the campus and city communities the department serves.
