CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson University is offering 452 of its full-time faculty and staff members a buyout worth nine months of base pay if they agree to leave, the university announced Thursday.

The limited voluntary separation program is open to employees in the state retirement system or the police retirement system who had qualified for an unreduced pension by June 30, 2026. Workers in the Optional Retirement Program qualify if they had reached age 59.5 by that date. The payment comes as a single lump sum.

Employees who get an offer have 45 days to decide, and anyone who signs on has seven days to change their mind. Offers went out by email from the program support office, and the university says college and division leaders helped design it so classes and daily operations keep running.

The buyouts are part of a wider review Clemson began this summer of how it organizes work and spends money. The university runs on a budget of nearly $2 billion, and pay and benefits are its largest expense at $1.01 billion. Trustees approved this year’s budget with a directive that any shortfall not be covered by tuition hikes.
