Detpak’s new Spartanburg plant tightens the Upstate manufacturing footprint that runs through Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. — Global packaging supplier Detpak has opened a new U.S. manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, adding another node to the Upstate corridor that runs from Clemson through the I-85 industrial belt.

The plant is designed to support major Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) customers with production based inside the U.S. supply chain in a July 20 company announcement. Detpak did not release specific investment figures or headcount in the announcement.

Why the Upstate keeps drawing this kind of manufacturer

The Upstate’s manufacturing story runs through Spartanburg County and Greenville County, but its logistics reach extends west to Pickens County and Clemson. Clemson University, School District of Pickens County, and the surrounding Prisma Health and AnMed Health campuses give the western Upstate a workforce and services base that connects into the same labor market that manufacturers on the I-85 corridor tap.

Detpak’s Spartanburg site is not a Clemson-side plant, and it will not directly change what workers in the Clemson-Pickens area see day-to-day. But it deepens the region’s role in a national supply story that has been building for years — one that has already brought BMW, Michelin, Milliken and dozens of Tier-1 suppliers to the corridor.

What the plant does

Detpak operates under a regional-manufacturing model, siting plants close to customer clusters rather than shipping from a single central hub. The Spartanburg facility gives the company a Southeast anchor inside overnight trucking distance of QSR customers stretching from the Carolinas through Georgia and Tennessee.

The announcement did not specify the plant’s initial product mix — whether cups, boxes, wraps or a broader packaging line.

Clemson’s spot in the Upstate manufacturing map

Clemson University’s applied research and engineering programs — particularly the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville — sit inside the same broader manufacturing story that Detpak’s Spartanburg plant extends. The university’s Pendleton-adjacent campus and Tri-County Technical College’s Pendleton campus continue to feed workforce and research links into the corridor.

Even where a new plant does not sit in Pickens County, its supplier chain, contractor base and skilled-labor pipeline typically reach back through the western Upstate.

What is not yet known

• Full-time headcount at the Spartanburg plant
• Total capital investment
• Whether Detpak will source packaging materials from other South Carolina suppliers
• Whether any Upstate research or engineering partnerships are attached to the site

HERE Clemson will track the corridor implications as Detpak’s Spartanburg ramp becomes more public.
