CLEMSON, S.C. — Army and Air Force ROTC cadets at Clemson University lined the Scroll of Honor with 498 small American flags Thursday evening, one for each alumnus who died serving the country.
The yearly flag placement opens a weekend of tributes leading into Saturday’s Military Appreciation football game, when the Tigers host Charleston Southern.
Starting at noon Friday, members of the Pershing Rifles C-4 unit will stand watch over the memorial around the clock for a full day. The flags are scheduled to stay up until 9 a.m. Monday.
The memorial sits across from Memorial Stadium, which carries its name in honor of Clemson graduates who made the supreme sacrifice. Names on the scroll span the conflicts in which those alumni served, and the alumni-run memorial site lets visitors search honorees by war and class year.
The tribute ties back to the school’s roots. Clemson operated as a military college through World War II, and its ROTC programs remain active today.
