CLEMSON, S.C. — Downtown parking in Clemson, S.C., could get easier for older residents, mourners and night-shift workers under three free parking passes the city reviewed this week.
City Council looked over the zero-fee permit programs during its Monday, Oct. 5, meeting. A Silver Pass would give Clemson residents 67 and older two hours of free parking each day in public, non-reserved spaces. A Funeral Services Pass would let downtown churches offer people attending a funeral or memorial up to three free hours per service.
A Business Overnight Pass is aimed at downtown employees who work outside regular enforcement hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cars using it would need to be moved, or parking paid, by 8 a.m., and the pass would not be honored on Special Event Saturdays.
At the same meeting, council held an affordable housing work session and approved revised guidelines for public hearings. Members also reviewed accommodations tax grant recommendations. The committee recommended giving out $345,265 of the $403,825 available, including $218,600 for the city tourism department and $34,565 for the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. Two requests were denied because they did not generate overnight hotel stays.
