TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Clemson safety Jerome Carter III turned a homecoming of sorts into the best night of his first season with the Tigers, collecting a sack and an interception at Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., in a game the Tigers won 36-24.

The family tie runs deep. His father, Jerome Carter Jr., played in the Seminoles secondary in four seasons, 2001-04, and later reached the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. The younger Carter grew up nearly 100 miles from Tallahassee, and with one sack and one pick he matched what his father did in the same stadium.

Carter came to Clemson as a transfer from Old Dominion, where he set a school record with six interceptions last season. Florida State had also tried to land him out of the portal.

His sack came on the opening drive and was the first of two the Tigers recorded against quarterback Ashton Daniels. His interception came when he read a deep throw aimed at Seminoles receiver Duce Robinson and cut in front of it for his first pick as a Tiger.

The rest of the secondary was just as busy. Elliot Washington II picked off Daniels twice, the last one near the goal line with just over a minute to play to end the game. A fourth-down scramble in the red zone also ended in a forced fumble that Jahiem Lawson recovered while Clemson led 26-10 in the third quarter.

Daniels still threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns, but the four giveaways kept Florida State from ever taking the lead. Clemson returns to action Saturday.
