# Glass Pumpkin Workshops Open Ahead of Pumpkin Palooza in Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. — Visitors to the City of Clemson Arts Center can now shape a pumpkin out of molten glass, as hands-on workshops kick off the countdown to the center’s sixth annual Pumpkin Palooza.

The free festival runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and again Saturday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the arts center at 212 Butler Street. Plans call for a jack-o’-lantern carving contest with prizes by age group, a patch of glass pumpkins, live glassblowing demonstrations, music and food.

The glassblowing sessions continue through Nov. 8. Anyone 8 or older can sign up. A session may run as long as two hours, and the cost depends on which time slot a person picks. Finished pieces have to cool for several hours before they go home. Registration is online at tac.clemsoncity.org.

Teaching the workshops is Devan Cole, owner of Hot Glass Academy in Americus, Georgia, who has worked with glass for 23 years and hauls a portable furnace to events around the country. Glass in his furnace reaches close to 2,000 degrees.

Arts Center Director Joan Rossini said last year’s festival drew more than 100 people, a record for the event, and the center hopes for about 150 this time.
