CLEMSON, S.C. — The fifth-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team scored twice in a span of 2 minutes, 18 seconds to erase a two-goal deficit, then settled for a 2-2 tie with Georgia Southern on Tuesday night, Oct. 6, at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
The game was scoreless at halftime. Clemson thought it had the opener in the 33rd minute on a long shot by Remi Okunlola, but the goal was taken off after a video review found a Tigers handball earlier in the play. Georgia Southern scored in the 52nd minute and again in the 78th to go up 2-0.
Clemson answered quickly. Duncan Wilson scored his sixth goal of the season in the 80th minute off a feed from Mason Jimenez, with Okunlola also assisting. About two minutes later, Christian Scott raced down the sideline and set up Ransford Gyan, whose team-leading ninth goal tied the game with eight minutes left. Clemson outshot the visitors 17-6 in the second half and earned seven corners.
Late in the game Wilson moved into goal after keeper Aleksa Janjic left, made a save, and the Tigers played out the match a man down without allowing another score. Clemson is now 9-2-1, and Georgia Southern is 6-1-3.
The Tigers return to conference play Sunday, Oct. 11, at No. 13 Stanford in Palo Alto, California.
