Clemson University is beginning its 2026-27 academic year, marked by the inaugural class of students in the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine. This Saturday, the college will host a white coat ceremony for these students, signifying a historic moment for South Carolina as they embark on a journey to become the state’s first veterinarians to graduate from an in-state veterinary school.
The establishment of the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine represents a significant collaborative effort. State leaders, including Senator Harvey S. Peeler Jr., donors, and dedicated faculty and staff contributed to bringing this program to fruition. The university’s president noted that this new college exemplifies what can be achieved when a university, the state, and the community unite around a shared vision.
The university president, in their third week in the role, has participated in various campus traditions, including conferring degrees on over 1,000 new alumni at August commencement and welcoming more than 5,000 new students at New Student Convocation. The president also assisted students with move-in, shared a meal at the President’s Cookout, and joined the Welcome Back Festival with students, faculty, staff, and members of the City of Clemson. These experiences have highlighted the strong sense of pride and care within the Clemson community.
Discussions with faculty and staff during events like the Leading Clemson Fiercely Forward Conversations have provided insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Clemson and higher education. The president emphasized that Clemson’s strength lies in its people, including faculty who inspire bold thinking, staff who create a supportive environment, and students who bring energy and purpose. Alumni, families, supporters, and partners also extend Clemson’s influence beyond its campuses.
The university’s vision for the academic year includes delivering a top-tier student experience, advancing research and innovation, and transforming lives across South Carolina and beyond. While acknowledging that the year will present challenges, the president expressed confidence in the community’s ability to address them and continue moving Clemson forward.
