How SCDNR Divides South Carolina Into Deer Zones
South Carolina is split into four SCDNR-designated game zones that each have their own deer season structure. The zones roughly follow geography: Zone 1 covers the mountainous upstate, Zone 2 covers the Piedmont, Zone 3 covers the Midlands (including Clemson) and the sandhills, and Zone 4 covers the coastal plain and lowcountry.
- Game Zone 1 (Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, most of Anderson and Spartanburg): shortest general firearms season, still-hunt only on WMAs, mountain bear zone overlays this zone
- Game Zone 2 (York, Cherokee, Union, most of Chester, Fairfield, Newberry — the Piedmont): mid-length season, dogs permitted on certain WMAs

Current Deer Season Dates and Structure
Game Zone 1 private land deer season runs August 15 through January 1 and permits both archery equipment and firearms from the opening day. There is no separate archery-only or muzzleloader-only preseason in Zones 3 and 4 — a bowhunter and a rifle hunter can share the same stand on August 15. WMA seasons within Game Zone 1 are shorter and structured: most Wildlife Management Areas open still-hunt seasons around mid-September and run through early January, with limited-quota structured hunts scattered throughout for specific tracts.
The rut in Clemson and the greater SC Upstate typically peaks between mid-October and the first week of November as bucks respond to shortening photoperiod and cooling nighttime temperatures. Bowhunters in the tree from October 20 through November 5 will see the most consistent rut activity, particularly during the first cold front that drops daytime highs into the 60s.
Bag Limits: What SC Residents Can Take
South Carolina’s deer bag limits are set annually by SCDNR and apply per hunter, aggregated across every zone, every season, and every method of take.
Antlered Bucks
- Resident daily bag limit: 2 antlered deer per day
- Resident season limit: 5 antlered deer per season (across all zones and methods combined)
- Of the 5 season antlered deer, 2 must meet the SCDNR antler restriction — either at least one antler with four or more points OR an inside spread of 12 inches or greater
- Non-resident season limit: 4 antlered deer per season
Antlerless Deer
- Antlerless daily bag: 2 per day
- Zone 2, 3, and 4 season limit: 8 antlerless deer
- Zone 1 season limit: 3 antlerless deer
- All antlerless harvest requires an Individual Antlerless Deer Tag, valid on private land starting September 15 (WMA rules vary by tract)
Residents automatically receive 3 free unrestricted buck tags and 2 free antlerless tags with a valid hunting license and big game permit. Additional antlerless tags are available at $5 each through SCDNR.
SC Game Check: The Mandatory Reporting Rule
Every deer taken in South Carolina must be tagged at the point of kill and reported through SC Game Check by midnight the day of harvest. Game Check reporting is done through the Go Outdoors SC mobile app or the SCDNR website. The reporter enters the tag number, GPS coordinates or county, weapon type, and sex of the deer. Reporting is mandatory — failure to report can result in a fine and license suspension.
Where Clemson Hunters Can Legally Hunt Deer

Access requires a $30.50 annual WMA permit in addition to a base hunting license and big game permit.
