South Carolina’s mountain deer season is shorter and more structured than the Midlands or Lowcountry calendars. For hunters around Clemson in Pickens County, the key is knowing which side of the Game Zone 1 / Game Zone 2 line you are on — then using the matching private-land method window from SCDNR.
Where Clemson sits on the SCDNR game-zone map
SCDNR divides South Carolina into four game zones. Per the official game-zone map, Game Zone 1 covers All properties north of the main line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad from the Georgia State line to South Carolina Hwy 183 in Westminster, then north of SC Hwy 183 to the Norfolk Southern main line in Greenville, and north of that main line to the Spartanburg County line. That zone Includes portions of Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties.
Game Zone 2 covers the rest of the Upstate Piedmont, including full counties such as Anderson, Spartanburg, Laurens, and Newberry, plus the portions of Oconee, Pickens, and Greenville south of that line. Hunters leaving Clemson for mountain tracts north of the line use Zone 1 dates; private land south of the line uses Zone 2 dates.
Game Zone 1 private-land deer dates (2026–27)
On private land in Game Zone 1, SCDNR lists:
- Primitive Weapons: Oct. 1-10
- Gun Hunts: Oct. 11-Jan. 1
Archery and crossbows are allowed during all seasons; Crossbows are considered archery equipment. There is no August private-land opener in Zone 1.
Youth deer hunt days on private land in Game Zone 1 are September 26, Antlered deer only, limit 1, and January 2, Either-sex, limit 2. Tags are not required on those youth days.
Bag limits that apply in Zone 1
Antlered deer statewide limits apply: Residents – 2 per day, 5 total all seasons and methods combined; Nonresidents – 2 per day, 4 total all seasons and methods combined.
For antlerless deer on private land in Game Zone 1, SCDNR sets an Antlerless Limit: 2 per day, 3 total all seasons and methods combined. Individual antlerless tags are valid in Game Zone 1 beginning Oct. 1.
Every harvested deer must be tagged at the point of kill prior to being transported. Report the harvest through SC Game Check by midnight on the day of harvest.
Other Zone 1 / Zone 2 private-land rules
Sunday hunting allowed on private lands. In Game Zones 1 and 2 it is unlawful to pursue deer with dogs. Baiting or hunting deer over bait is permitted on private lands statewide.

Confirm your stand is north or south of the Norfolk Southern / Hwy 183 line before you hunt. Zone 1 private-land primitive weapons open October 1; gun hunts open October 11.
